Ex Aliquo for the Daryl Runswick Prize

My piece 'Ex Aliquo', made the final of the Daryl Runswick Competition, adjudicated by Stephen Fry. The title 'Ex Aliquo', the Latin for "out of something", evokes how one can take an idea out of thin air and develop it into something very large and dramatic. This is the form this piece follows; from stillness and calm to drama. The first movement, 'Approach', foreshadows the arrival of a great storm, which then rages in the second movement, 'Storm and Repose'. Everything eventually becomes still and composed again, leaving you with that familiar, sometimes pleasant smell of petrichor, when rain reacts with soil. The recording was conducted by Gregory Rose.
